Putty Root - closeup

I found several of this native orchid species (Aplectrum hymale) blooming in the local woods this past week. It is fairly common in the Piedmont area of NC. When you get a close view of the flower you can see its nice lip. Here is a shot of the flower head (www.flickr.com/photos/ncorchid/498085504/in/photostream/). It has a deciduous leaf that is present during the fall and winter that dies off when the flower spike comes in the spring. Here is a shot of the winter leaves (www.flickr.com/photos/ncorchid/45911931/).
