OH DEAR!!!!!!

I made this cake for a friend who lives overseas and is going back home on Sunday. Her and her hubby have been admiring my cakes from o'seas for a while, and I just wanted them to get a taste of one before they went back.

So i made them this. I had intended on painting a leopard pattern on the beauty case but then the color and fondant turned out so nice, that I thought i would just leave it.

When i put the case on top of the suitcase i ripped the icing on the side of the case with my fingers. DOH!!!

So it had to have the print on it to cover up the mess. Fine. I did the brown part, and that was fine, then did the black. DISASTER!!!!

STUPID STUPID me picked up a candy color instead of one of my other colors. Before knew it, the stuff has dripped on the sides and made a mess.

I thought that I could rip off the icing and start again, however at midnight and having to go to work the next day, plus having no choc for more ganache, i deicided to leave it and work it out in the morning. I posted a cry for help in the morning in a couple of forums, and got some wonderful ideas.

My best friend offered to come over and help me spray the whole thing with the airbrush.

In the end I decided to just leave it. My friend and her family loved it. She collects antique suitcases so it was very fitting.

So it has a few drips (LOTS OF DRIPS) such is life!!!

Certainly not my best work, but the recipient was happy and at the end of the day, it's not perfection that matters :D

Well, I had to have a good look to find the source of the 'oh dear' (I probably wouldn't have spotted it at all if you hadn't mentioned something was wrong) and even so, its a stunning cake!

I too have to search to see what was wrong Great save Nati! It really is wonderful!

PS: Now I am back working full time I have often wondered how you can produce such awesome cakes while working the hours you do!!
  • Yana's cakes 5y

You know what, I would've never spotted it if you haven't told and that is saying something as I always see things. It is a joke inbetween my g/friends "Even Yana won't notice" - I always do ;)

I trully thought it was meant to be this way. There is nothing wrong with stripes being on leopard print!!!!!

Great cake, Nati. LOVE the aqua colour. Absolutely fantastic!
  • Vilma 5y

What an amazing cake.....I wouldn't have noticed the imperfection if you hadn't shown me....love the whole effect.

As a novice cake decorator, who goes through some sort of panic everytime I decorate a cake, it is heartening to know that even professional decorators like you can have mishaps...doesn't make me feel so hopeless and gives me courage to continue...thanks for being so honest Nati...:O))

  • Angela Chin Negron 5y

Oh Natalia... they are perfect! I sincerely think a little drippings here and there make it more natural than photo perfect.. what can I say you are such perfectionist! You set such high standard for yourself.. Love the color combo too.. you are so good at this...

thanks for the comments ladies ;)
Vilma the cakes were 9x11 and 7x9. I did trim them once i had torted and baked them, so that the sides were really even, but they wouldn't have been more than an inch smaller that the tins i used.

That explains the 'oh dear' title. I didn't notice it until I read your story. Overall, it looks great, and I'm sure it tastes awesome!
