At the start of the war, he was a first lieutenant with Company A. On June 11, 1861, Watson became the captain of the company. Before the Battle at Antietam, Captain Watson was absent on duty in Wilmington, but swiftly returned to his regiment. He died in battle while advancing his men on the field.
