This image shows a detail of an historiated initial 'I' with a kneeling figure of Philosophy in a red robe. Decoration in these early manuscripts was added after the completion of the text. When illuminated with gold leaf, the gold was applied before the colours, as it can be a messy activity involving trimming with a knife which would have damaged any existing colours.
