Cabot retired from constant travelling in around 1958, when he became the stage doorman at the Wellington Opera House. There he befriended visiting performers and collected their autographs and programmes; a particular favourite was Basil Brush!
In an interview for the Evening Post, 3 February 1973, at the age of 83, he declared that he wouldn’t change a moment of his very full life.
