Vellum manuscript fragment used as a pastedown in the binding process

Sebastian Brant, Das Narrenschiff [Latin] (Augsburg: Johann Schönsperger, 1 Apr. 1497). RSM BRANT Stul 1497.

Many incunables incorporate earlier manuscripts which have been cut up and re-used in the binding process. This fragement has been used as a pastedown. A pastedown is the first or last leaf in a book which is pasted onto the inside of the boards to hide the sewing and where the leather of the cover is turned in.
