      What a lovely portrait! I'm probably reading way too much into it, but his face really tells the story of a determined man who has weathered a storm or 50.

      Yes... I think if he told me, "Believe or perish!" my first thought would be that HE was the one doing the perishing!

      GwennieP, that is what I used to think...but then in Photographic history class we all realised that "smiling for a photograph" just wasn't really the done thing back then. Not to mention the slow shutter speeds that were involved. Smiles are hard to hold still and so there would be a horrible blurring around the mouth and chin if he were to smile too much.
