Deinstallation and Preservation of Albert Herter Murals
On June 15, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) began a major restoration of its building at 2101 Constitution Ave., N.W. The project will restore and improve the building’s historic spaces, increase accessibility, and bring the building's aging infrastructure and facilities into the 21st century.

Two iconic paintings by Albert Herter are part of the NAS Building. One, on the wall of the Great Hall, shows Prometheus aided by Athena, stealing the divine fire from the chariot of Helios to bring mankind the flame of knowledge; another, displayed in the Board Room, depicts Abraham Lincoln with the NAS founders signing the Academy's charter.
