Portland, Vic
Portland is the earliest European settlement in Victoria, where the Henty family decided to establish themselves after their initial forays to the Swan River and Van Dieman's Land colonies were unsuccessful. The arrived in 1834, a year before the foundation of Melbourne.

Many of the town's earliest buildings are still standing, some still serving their original purpose, such as the 1849 customs building. My trip to Portland was to research both this early history, as well as engage with the landscape that shaped the lives of the early settlers, as it had those of the Gunditjmara people for millennia.
