Liverpool Plains, NSW
Gunnedah and the Liverpool Plains region will feature in the new Landmarks gallery at the National Museum of Australia. The exhibit will consider how transport technology linked regional areas in the 19th century. The particular focus is on coach transport and a coach used in the area by the Nowland family will be on display.

In late October 2008 I visited Gunnedah and followed some of the pathways traversed by the various coach routes. Gunnedah, Narrabri, Rocky Glen, Coonabarabran, Quirindi and Murrurundi were all on my itinerary. Along the way you pass through open plains, cross major rivers, move through the Pilliga scrub and traverse the Liverpool Range.

While this was done in the air-conditioned comfort of my hire car it helped give me a sense of the landscape, the distances travelled and the way the coach routes provided connections between communities.
