Abandoned books

One of the most astonishing things we found during our weekly explorations on the eastside was the abandoned East St. Louis Public Library. Apparently, there were a ton of books that were simply forgotten when the library moved to a new location. By the time we arrived on the scene, they'd been sitting here for years, exposed to the unforgiving humidities and temperatures of the St. Louis seasons. There was a load of other stuff, too. Old 8mm film strips, LPs, audiovisual equipment in various states of disrepair...

A few months after this photo was taken, the city finally noticed that they were missing 7,000 books and went in to retrieve everything. Based on the condition of the books that I saw, it was probably too late to salvage most of them, but it was a noble effort nonetheless. Bizarrely, it now seems that they've been abandoned again, since the city hasn't paid the bill for the storage space where they're keeping them.
