"Can Opener" for Webb Telescope Mirrors
Three of the 18 primary mirror segments and the one secondary mirror that will fly aboard NASA's James Webb Space Telescope arrived at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. in large silver canisters. In this photo, two engineers guide the top of the canister as it closes over the exposed mirror segment within. The canisters are opened and closed by lifting the lid with by four straps. They were shipped from Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. of Boulder, Colo. who manufactured and packed them. More information: www.jwst.nasa.gov.
