NASA's James Webb MIRI Gets a Lift

NASA's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) is getting a lift in the giant clean room at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. MIRI has both a camera and a spectrograph that sees light in the mid-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum, which are wavelengths that are longer than our eyes can see. In this photo, MIRI was being lifted onto the ASMIF (Ambient Science Instrument Mechanical Interface Fixture). The MIRI will fly onboard NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, the next generation space telescope that will succeed the Hubble Space Telescope.
