Webb Telescope MIRI Instrument Arrives at NASA Goddard
The first instrument that will fly onboard NASA's James Webb Space Telescope was delivered to NASA on May 30, 2012. The Mid-Infrared Instrument (or MIRI) will allow scientists to study cold and distant objects in greater detail than ever before. The MIRI is being unloaded in a "Envirotainer," its shipping container, and moved into the cleanroom at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. It was assembled at and shipped from the Science and Technology Facilities Council's (STFC) Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in the U.K. The MIRI was developed by a consortium of 10 European institutions and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
