James Webb Space Telescope Cryogenic Testing

A screenshot from the James Webb Space Telescope "Webbcam" showing the test chamber that Webb telescope has been sealed within, undergoing cryogenic testing. During the summer of 2017, Webb was tested at a space-like vacuum and extremely cold temperatures in NASA Johnson's historic "Chamber A." The overlay shows the interior temperature of the Chamber.

Webb will operate at extremely cold temperatures in space, on the order of ~39K. The instruments and telescope optics were all put through their paces during testing to ensure that they will perform correctly in space.
