My sunrise set was done, but than I saw this…
This image was shot on this date last year in Lao Chai village near Sapa, Vietnam. The occasion was the anniversary for my friend mother passing, three years earlier. I was among the first to come to this whole day ceremony, where the Hmong believe the spirit of those gone come back to mingle among them for the day. There were several hundreds visitors coming all day long, from near and a far, bringing gifts of rice and wine. The Hmong call this “a party”.
I asked Mu, a sister of my friend So, to pose for me as the sun was rising over the Muong Hoa valley.
