Mildred Jewett, "Madaket Millie"

Newer Older

The protector of the western end of Nantucket Island, Madaket Mille watched for shipwrecks, cared for her animals, sold ice cream, and was a gruff feature of the Nantucket landscape until her death in 1990.

There are many stories about Madaket Millie. She killed a 300-pound shark in Hither Creek; was a good friend of Mr. Fred Rogers; and was awarded, by the U.S. Coast Guard its highest civilian rank, chief warrant officer W-4. She was born September 24th, 1907.

A lot of people owe their lives to CWO4 Millie. I am proud to say I knew and sailed with her. I still have one of her "pennies", you Coasties know what that is about.

When I would visit my grandmother, we would stay in Millie's old cottage and my grandma would regale us with stories about Millie. Oh they were some funny ones too!
