beard-off week 6.5

About half-way through my 12-mile (19km) commute this morning. The bank sign said -2F (-19C) as I rode past it. I seem to generate a lot of heat and have no problem staying warm, although I think I look like a muppet in this photo.

to sveden: torso-cotton t-shirt, and two thin polyester shells. bottom: cotton boxers, one pair of cycling tights, cutoff carhartts. thin wool socks, heavier wool socks, cycling shoes. one pair of discounted lobster gloves. thin wigwam brand hat. beard. nothing fancy or expensive, and most of what I have I got on a clearance rack.

My bag is mostly full of extra clothing, and I am ready to stop and bundle up if I feel cold or say get a flat. Don't get me wrong - if I stop moving I'll start to get cold. The trick is to keep moving...

It's much colder standing on the corner waiting for a bus than it is pumping your legs on a bicycle on your way to work - but I fear that few will ever realize this.

I find it more satisfying riding in on these cold mornings, especially so when I ride by dozens of unattended idling cars sitting on streets and driveways - their owners desperately trying to warm their commuter coffins by feeding their ever thirsty engines with petroleum.

Hurl - your beard is feeble, give up now.
