Stephen James and his "bloody big truck" 1/100
Well it has begun. My 100 Strangers Project 100 Strangers Flickr Group page after reading many of the threads from the group I decided to ease into it. I was at an exhibition and heard this gent introduced at one of the artists. I milled about for some time and watched him move from group to group of admirers. The moment arose and he was alone. I walked up and introduced myself. I asked I could take his portrait...... and he agreed! We discussed where and thought in front of his work would be great. He struck this pose and my first 100 strangers was done. We moved over to another of his works and discussed art and in particular photography and discovered a joint belief that the equipment is just that, a means to an end and not the deciding factor in a great shot. That the eye is what makes it. He asked me about using film and I told him about a great local bloke who stocked and developed just about any film. He loved the tonality that film gives over digital in Black and White. I was pretty nervous, but he made it so easy. We swapped cards and I promised to send him an image. So 1/100 done and dusted!
The exhibition "Black, a coal case" is a totally brilliant exhibition currently being shown at the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery. Todd Fuller is the curator. There are large works in oils, charcoal, digital prints, HD video, carving and even some gold leaf! Absolutely worth a visit. It runs until 18 September 2011.
