Castel Sant'Angelo

Here is Castel Sant'Angelo also known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian. It is a cylindrical building located on the bank of the Tiber river. Now a museum, it had served many purposes in the early days from a mausoleum, prison to a Papal refuge. There is a secret passage which connects this place with the Vatican. On top of the Castel is a statue of Michael sheathing his sword.

If you're an Assassin's Creed fan, this fortress appeared in the Brotherhood sequel. It was also featured in Dan Brown's Illuminati book, which led me to visit Rome for the first time in 2007.

Spanning across the river and in front of the fortress is Ponte Sant'Angelo. The bridge is a pedestrian bridge and it provides excellent point of view of the fortress from across the river, however it was full with vendors selling souvenirs and imitation stuffs. So its quite hard to get a decent shot from the bridge itself without having too much croud on it. The only way is to wake up early during the wee hours of the morning. Sadly my accommodation was quite far from the river side and i didn't manage to do that.
