Fresh scars for this Menit tribe girl - Tum Ethiopia

Newer Older

This teenager was in Tum, in Southern Nations Nationalities and People's Region, Ethiopia, she is from Menit tribe, a tribe which is not really friend with Surma! As you can see on her face, she has fresh scars made by scratching the skin. it is a beauty sign in the tribe. With those scars, the girl will have more value when she will be sold for wedding.
Surma also offer to the few tourists to see a scarification ceremony (you must pay a big amount for this), and use razor blades to make scars on the tits of the young women. I refused to pay for this as it was like paying for a torture session - for me. So you won't see any picture of this ceremony, which is made also when tourists are not there, but which is aslo made specially for tourists!

great photo, but i would never pay to see something like this. i have the strong assumption, that a lot of these rituals nowadays are just done for making money with the tourists (lip plates???) ,understandable though...
