Whitman Mission National Historic Site

Marcus Whitman and his wife Narcissa opened a mission here among the Cauyse Indians in 1836. It was located along the Oregon Trail, near today's Walla Walla, Washington. The mission ended in tragedy on November 29, 1847, when a group of Cayuse, upset over a measles epidemic that was destroying the tribe, massacred the Whitman's and 16 others at the mission.
