Winner, Winner, Scallop Dinner!
Scalloping is a popular, family-friendly, and economically important recreational activity throughout the Big Bend and eastern Panhandle.
In recent years, we have taken an adaptive approach by managing the bay scallop fishery to balance community and stakeholder desires for this fishery with the sustainability of scallop populations.
Due to short life spans (~1yr) and susceptibility to environmental changes, bay scallop abundance can be highly variable from year-to-year.
We have been working with communities and stakeholders to identify a well-balanced, sustainable season structure that can be implemented long-term.
