Snowy Plover Mother & Chick

A well-camouflaged snowy plover and her chick.

You can help shorebirds while at the beach by looking out for nesting birds, eggs and chicks that may be hidden in your path. Many of Florida’s shorebirds and seabirds nest on the open beach, where they lay eggs in shallow areas (called scrapes) in the sand. Eggs and chicks are so well camouflaged that they can be accidentally stepped on by beachgoers.
