Statewide tagging study lands in Merritt’s Mill Pond
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) biologists are conducting a statewide project to measure catch and harvest rates for Florida’s trophy-sized largemouth bass, weighing 8 pounds or more. Previous sampling trips to Merritt’s Mill Pond near Marianna in the Florida Panhandle indicated a rising largemouth population, making it an ideal small lake to add to the study. In spring 2013, biologists aimed to capitalize on this opportunity and tag trophy-sized bass, increasing the scope of the study. Efforts to tag trophy-sized largemouths were successful, and biologists believe future sampling may also be a success as they noted many bass just under the 8-pound mark.
