Florida Manatees and Tropical Storm Debby
Tropical Storm Debby, with its slow movement and heavy rain, contributed to Florida’s wettest June on record. Unusual manatee rescue scenarios and carcass response efforts following Debby challenged Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) scientists. FWRI is appreciative of the invaluable assistance of volunteers, FWC Law Enforcement, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, City of Oldsmar and the Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue who helped with the manatee rescues. Response to the Cedar Key carcasses would not have been possible without the help of Ron Cannon.

What to do if you see a sick, injured, dead, or tagged manatee.

Rescue activities were conducted under the US Fish and Wildlife Service permit # MA770191.
