Rescuing Oil-Impacted Turtles
FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute biologists and commercial charter boat fishermen teamed up to help rescue oil-impacted sea turtles in the waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico in 2010. Rescue boats departed daily (weather permitting) and traveled offshore to the eastern zone of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill area. The rescue crews used GPS to record where sea turtles were located and collected data on environmental conditions at the capture location. They transported any oil-impacted sea turtles to a nearby facility for rehabilitation.
