American shad

American shad are native to the Atlantic coast of North America. This fish spends its summers in Canadian bays in and around Nova Scotia, and during the winter months it migrates along the coast searching for spawning grounds in rivers as far south as Florida’s St. Johns River. Habitat loss and overfishing have contributed to a population decline that has been going on for decades, with many fisheries presently closed.
