The next best thing
There's no glory coming in second. Like I've never completely aced any particular subject of interest in my entire life, thus I'm barely ever glorified. Keeps my otherwise behemoth ego under check. The nature is indeed perfectly balanced.
I'm like the kid the background, exhausted by my efforts, but not entirely dissatisfied with the results. There's a different kind of 'fun' at being the 'next best thing'. You never have trouble 'sleeping', thinking you might just be ousted from the principality the next day. That school of thought is either ingenious, or just a cognitive response against constant defeat.
Yes, the kid up front might be an intrepid pioneer, but it is also he who is at the most risk of being trampled by the oncoming traffic. A macabre imagination, I agree, but a stark reality none the less.
PS: I don't know how this looks in your monitor, I was without electricity the whole day and had to edit this on the tiny LCD screen of a highly uncalibrated netbook
