Casuariestraat The area of this street was in 1563 property of Cornelis of Bleyenburch and in 1603 of Joachim van Hardenbroek and Pieter Sterling. The street also occurs as Sterlingstraat. Concerning the declaration of the name several theories have been considered. In 1623 there an inn called the Casuaris that was notorious. A casuaris is also a bird, which occurs on nieuw-Guinea. Since 1683 here the Théâtre Français the drawer Haye had been, the "French comedie" established. As from 1902 the penitentiary to the Prinsegracht was moved to the Casuariestraat, where it had the name ` house of preservation. The prison lay here behind the palace of justice which was located on the korte voorhout (in the former palate of prince Frederik). At the bombardment of the 3 March 1945 the house of preservation was damaged heavily, but it was restored around 1967. Then it was used for the new ministry of finances. The prison moved then to Scheveningen.
