Geiger's Nursemaids

    Newer Older

These ants are reacting to me watering the apricot tree. The water invaded their nest, so workers began dragging the unhatched young up into the branches of the fruit tree. I saw workers, male ants, soldiers, and something big I think might be a queen. (On second thought, maybe it was a termite that got mixed in)

Here, the larva these females are carrying looks like an egg to the naked eye. But when you get in there with a 1:1 macro lens mounted on an extension tube, for a total magnification of 2:1, you can see they are carrying something from an HR Geiger bad dream. It has eyes and primordial features.

The ants are the very tiny black ants (Linepithema humile) which, when lit right, aren't black at all.

Amazing creatures. This photo makes me want to run out in the backyard with my macro lenses and see what's crawling around out there.

Look at da baby ant! Awwwww!

You know I'm one of the few people in the world that would say that and mean it.
