Wow. I've been looking round for a lens that will separate backgrounds better than my EF-S 17-85 f4-5.6 and I gotta say this has got me thinking about your 85!
b-listed, just about any prime lens will do that better than your zoom, the difference between f/5.6 (at 85mm on your lens) and f/1.8 in terms of depth of field control is huge! Not to mention the improvements in image quality primes have over zooms even twice their price.
