Tenaya Peak, Dusk, Yosemite National Park

    Newer Older

On our first evening in the park, we returned to Olmsted Point to shoot the sunset on Half Dome. After shooting that we took our time reassembling as a group to head out for the evening and, since I wasn't yet the very last person back to the car, I continued to look around for opportunities to shoot.

Looking back up northeast from Olmsted Point I noticed there was a bit of pink color lingering in the clouds and I realized they were likely to really pop with the addition of a polarizer. There color was isolated to a small patch of the sky, but conveniently it was directly over Tenaya Peak from my perspective. I framed the peak and clouds tightly to pull in the best of the light.

In post I had to do some color balancing in the foreground to remove most of the blue cast, most of which was wiped out by choosing an appropriate white balance. With the white snow, I found that too strong of a blue cast couldn't be easily overlooked and accepted as natural, so I attempted to neutralize it.

Beautiful! Glad to see that there is still a good bit of snow there. Our trip last month there was so wonderful - thanks for letting me reminisce!

The gentle contrast between the pastel pink sky and grey/blue peak draws the viewer to the picture. Simple yet stunning.
