The Pirate Tower Of Victoria Beach

Still waiting for June gloom to go away, so I'm reaching back to last Summer for a shot of my favorite spot in Laguna Beach. On this particular night, I think there were three professional shoots going on in addition to a number of landscape photographers, a number of skim boarders and assorted tourists from all over the country. Fortunately, I was able to squeak between everyone and get a couple of shots off just before the sun sank below the horizon.

The tower to the right was, from what I understand, built at some point in the 1920's as a stairway for beach access for the house above. However, a new owner took over in the 1940's and was apparently known for dressing as a pirate and hiding "treasure" around the tower. Whatever the neighborhood kids found, they were allowed to keep. Time and the elements have had their way with the tower over the years, and it doesn't look all that solid anymore. Hopefully the new owners, and perhaps the city of Laguna Beach, will work together to keep the tower standing as I can't imagine Victoria Beach without it.
