An Auto Rickshaw Ride in Bangalore

Tues. Feb 12, 2008 - After visiting the Bull Temple in Bangalore, I decided to video part of the ride back to Richmond Town disctrict with the Nokia N82. Riding in a rickshaw in Bangalore was much safer and much less traffic than Chennai. Chennai had more traffic and the streets were not as wide as the streets in Bangalore. Good fun, though.

Did you ever try a cycle rickshaw? After that, I was thrilled to step into an auto rickshaw to get around. And, actually, with full breeze going at you, it's more comfortable than riding a car in India. For obvious reasons, I discovered most of the car drivers did not want to run the A/C even if they had it and advertised it's availability. Altogether, the auto rickshaw was my favorite mode of Indian transport, after the always pleasant experience of riding the train.

I was in South India for my whole two week trip and I only saw auto rickshaws, not cycle rickshaws.

I did like riding in the auto rickshaws for the breeze and excitement of it all. Bangalore was pretty calm, but in Chennai it was exciting.

I worked in Chennai for a month but my company kept us pretty shut up in the glitzy hotel and with our own personal driver and requirements to be accompanied everywhere (funny enough, the one of the two times I was actually sexually harassed in India happened in the glitzy hotel).

But after being there for work, I took a two week vacation up north taking the "Golden Triangle" route. Delhi was where I took the cycle rickshaw ride. Yeesh. Never again.

After dealing with Chennai and Delhi, every other stop along the way seemed pretty calm, traffic and transportation-wise. :) By the time I got to Udaipur, I felt like the city was exceedingly calm and relaxing and I fell in love.

I think getting the big cities of India done first let me appreciate the small cities all the more.

I had heard from friends who went to India on business that they were given a driver & were accompanied. After the 1st day when my friend Jay departed, I was on my own and it was not a problem in the South of India.

I also went on Flickr to find out if anyone was doing a photowalk and found that the Chennai Photowalk Flickr Group was doing one the 2nd day I was there. The photography folks I met & talked to while walking up Mount Road were delightful. I will definitely go back to Chennai and make sure I make it on a weekend with a photowalk.

I really liked Chennai, Bangalore, Kerala & Mumbai. Mumbai was a big sprawled out mess like LA or Miami and I felt right at home within 15 minutes. ;o)
