Italy Visit / Jauffen Pass Climb
As we were about to leave Italy and head for home, we couldn't decide the best way to go. We would have to go back down south to gain access to the highway we used to get here and the other choice was an unknown back door route. We decided to let the GPS decide and it chose to go north through the back roads. However, we had no idea what we were in for as it turned out to be a rugged mountain road known as the Jauffen Pass. The scenery was amazing and the road even more amazing, full of switch backs, hard twists, and extreme turns. We climbed ever higher leaving the valley below, shrinking with every turn. We rose above the tree line, past avalanche prevention fencing, and finally reached the peak, where a small business and pull off area was found. It was very cold and windy and we took in the view of the craggy snow covered mountain tops within view. Next, we would have to go down the other side to cross back over to Austria.
