being David Hobby's lightstand
So today I was one of a lucky hadful of people who got to spend some time being given a Strobist demo by Dave Hobby himself! Happy days. Unfortunately I missed the first hour of the 2 hour session but managed to hook up with the rest of the group just prior to the shoot you see here taking place.
Ring flash seems to be the in thing at the minute so it was interesting to see it being put to use. It was a 3 light setup. The 2 you see in the images above and then one being held by me snooted onto the wall in the background.
The big thing I got from the session is that it's OK to chimp! Sometimes I think I take to many test shots working out the levels of each light individually. Seeing David doing exactly this was a real confidence boost. He also used another favourite trick of mine which was giving his model a mark to stand on. Basically the intersection of the paving slabs.
We only got to see the final image on the LCD but it did look cool! Hopefully Nik (the "model") will find this and post a link to the final shot when Dave sends it through to him.
(if you're in this pic could you please "note" yourself - thanks)
