Gothic Gate Lodge

    Newer Older

If you are a Lord of the Rings fan or just appreciate a lovely walk in a magical setting you simply must visit the Ballysaggartmore Towers in Co. Waterford. This is Waterford's and is one of Ireland's best kept secrets.

The magical woodland trail known as 'The Towers' is located 3 miles outside of Lismore Town. Here the visitor can stroll through woodlands and view this exotic gate lodge and the bridge that were constructed by landlord Arthur Kiely Ussher in 1850 to impress a very demanding wife who wished to live in a large house.

The cost of building the elaborate Gothic entrance proved so great that the house was never built.

A superb shot! With that great sky and those vivid coluurs the towers really come to life in this shot - I can see why you describve it as magical - it really is a fairytale entrance. You do have to wonder though, had he ever gotten around to building a house, just how wonderful it would have been!

magical shot & location, its a shame these places are left to there own demise, so many castle's and gate lodges that could be brought back to life, at the the rate your capturing these rare sites you could publish a very nice book.

I'm not sure whether it's the whimsical blending of architectural styles or the reasons (usually vanity) that amuse me the most but revival architecture always makes me grin.
