Applying road salt in Minnesota. When snow and ice melts, road salt goes with it, washing into our lakes, streams, wetlands, and groundwater. At high concentrations, chloride can harm fish and plant life. The MPCA works with MnDOT and others who apply salt to MN roads on strategies to minimize salt usage. Learn more:
