Portable Profoto with a Vagabond II
Strobist has got me hooked on portable power. So much so that I have wanted a Profoto 600B which is a 600ws power pack with a battery in it. I just couldn't justify spending the money when I have a pair of 600ws Profoto monoblocs.
With that I started researching some DIY battery packs with pure-sine-wave inverters. You know, you stuff a battery, the inverter and a battery charger in a cooler with wheels, and off you go.
Sounds great in theory, but the cheapest pure-sine-wave inverter I could find (I needed 1200 watts for both strobes minimum) was like $350. On the other hand, the Vagabond II is $299 and is ready to go right out of the box with the proper inverter, battery and charger all in one small package.
The specs seemed to add up so I gave it a chance and it does in fact power at least one of my mono lights, and should work with both. It does take some time to recharge the monolight, and you can hear at "fluttering" as it does it, but it seems to work just fine.
I have already shot a couple of vehicles with it and like the results--now off for some more testing!
