Just one man. Robert. And 150 cows, not known by names, but by numbers. And a remarkable good will among the heavy animals.
Six at a time can give milk in this semi-automatic milking machine. The display shows the cow's RFID tag number, so the farmer can tell exactly how many glasses of milk he gets from each cow.
What's really fascinating is that there is only one operator - and 150 cows. All he does is attaching the milking device to each cow, and an odd collaboration between cows, electronics and automated gates do the rest.
One driving force, the operator told me, is that the cows actually want to get milked. It's rather painful walking around with many liters of milk if you're a cow (or human). That entices the cows to orderly stand in lines and wait for their turns.
