Hibiscus kokio subsp. saintjohnianus (yellow flower)

koki'o 'ula 'ula.

This rare yellow form is something that I have really wanted to grow for a long time. I was thrilled to find one for sale at the Lyon Arboretum Plant Sale, July 2008.

This form is particularly showy with wide petals and deeply saturated colours. I really love it! It's considered a (sub)species of concern by the Endangered Species Act and is endemic to the Nā Pali coast of Kaua'i.

I gave this plant to Kumu Ka'ākahi in January this year to plant near a special lo'i in Wai'anae.
