This is not really the kind of landscape you have in your mind when you’re thinking of Siberia, but summers at Lake Baical are actually quite hot. On Olkhon Island, where I took this photograph, it hardly rains throughout the summer and in the southern part of the island even snow is quite rare. It all has to do with this massive amount of water surrounding the island which creates a mini-climate. Hard to imagine, when you’re thinking that 6-7 months of the year the lake can be used as a frozen highway!
Ooh, and if you’re thinking it’s the perfect place to swim, you’re right, it does look very inviting, but the water temperature is only about 12-13 degrees Celsius!
