Mount Taranaki

An aerial view of Egmont National Park, Taranaki, New Zealand.

Taken from the window of an airplane. A rough pass through Photoshop filters has removed the glare.

Incredible!! Why is the green ring around the volcano so round? Is this the man made boundary of the park?
  • Jon Sullivan PRO 10y

Yes, made by European settler men. This would have all been forest not so very long ago. Now what is not National Park is mostly dairy farming. It makes for a spectacular view.

reminds me a little of Mt. Osorno in Chile, also in a preserve. The green ring & the symmetry of the mountain.

Actually, now that I see it again--it's like a little Mt. Shasta with Shastina.

Awesome photo - love the fact you can see exactly where the park boundaries are because that's where the trees are.

Cool image - from the angle, Fantham's Peak (the bit jutting towards the plane in this shot) you would have been over South Taranaki, the town in the lower right would be Stratford and in the top-right corner by the coast, I think that's a glimpse of New Plymouth.

What a great shot. One of the best shots I've ever seen of what is probably my favorite mountain.

You are so lucky, Jon! Of all the times I've been in Taranaki, the mountain was covered with cloud! Superb shot. Seen in www.backpackercampervans.co.nz/40-stunning-images-of-new-....

I have a client who has written a book on the Taranaki region and would like to be able to use your aerial photo of Mt Taranaki on a website promoting the book. Is it possible to get permission do do this?
  • Jon Sullivan PRO 6mo

That's certainly a possibility. You can email details to jon.j.sullivan@me.com.
