It's Called Windansea

    Newer Older

In 1979 Tom Wolfe wrote a best seller "The Right Stuff" about the first american astronauts. But before that in 1968 he wrote a lesser known series of articles titled "The Pump House Gang". One article was about a group of surfers at Windansea Beach in La Jolla. This article introduced surfers and their subculture to the rest of the country.

The name "Pump House Gang" was taken from a sewage pump house that is still located on the top of the hill about 40 yards from the palm covered surf shack. The surfers met at the pump house while waiting for the surf to get good. This beach has a history along with being a beautiful place. Its still a favorite surfer beach and if you look close a lone surfer is sitting under the surf shack rubbing some wax on his board before heading into the sunset waters.

The surf shack, aka "sugar shack" is another story best saved for a future post to flickr :)
