Mildred Panagos (age 7 or 8) seated in a toy Spirit of St. Louis airplane. Photograph, 1927. Missouri History Museum Photograph and Print Collection. n40992.
This photo was the work of an unknown, but enterprising photographer who capitalized on the enthusiasm for all things Charles Lindbergh by traveling from school to school taking photographs of children in the “Spirit of St. Louis.” He built it from what appears to be a wheel barrow or wagon.
The photo was donated by the daughters of Mildred Panagos: Linda Franklin, Mildred Shelton, and Annabel Dauer. According to Mildred’s daughters, she was at least as fond of the cozy, warm coat she is pictured in as she was of Lindbergh.
