Portraits: Faces and Profiles of Utility
A special thanks to FILE magazine for presenting a selection seen here from Portraits: Faces and Profiles of Utility.

Icon: " a usually pictorial representation; a sign (as a word or graphic symbol) whose form suggests its meaning”

Often, the subject matter of barns and cribs is portrayed as little more than a photographic cliché signifying little more than sentimentality and nostalgia.

Growing up on a small family farm in Northwest Iowa, I admit a personal affinity for the landscape there shaped by the farms it supports. But, like growing up, change is inevitable. This is about my little corner of the world from where I come, shaped by many small farms that for the most part now seem to be a much different place.

These are my own personal icons; surrogate symbols - whose form suggests its meaning. This is my search to find comfort in that there is still meaning embodied in these rural utility structures.
