Under the arch

This photo was taken in Rome in March this year. It looks under the arch of Septimius Severus at part of the roman Forum. The road passing under the arch is the Via Sacra, used in roman times for triumphal processions.

The arch was erected in 203 AD to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the accession of Septimius Severus - the emperor of the roman empire who originally came from North Africa. You can clearly see one of the Victories just above the central arch... she is holding a trophy of defeated enemy costumes.

The photo was taken from the "Tabularium" (underlying the more modern Palazzo Senatorio), which overlooks the northwest end of the Forum.
