Sleep | Gulmarg, Kashmir

Newer Older

Captured a tired sledge-puller sleeping on the snow.

There are about 3000 sledge pullers in Gulmarg and they live on a meagre monthly pay from their union, based on the number of jobs they bring in through the month.

Its a tough job pulling humans on a wooden sledge uphill thru the hard and soft snow. (Quite strikingly on the lines of the hand rickshaw pullers of calcutta!).
Ironically, however inhuman the nature of job , this is their only source of living.

Deepak, i didnt use any special filters. The pollution free environment naturally provides rich colors, a feast for eyes.. Something we miss in our urban life.

If they get enough to eat and necessary rest the strenuous work will afford strength and good health. I can only hope this is the case and they can keep tips.

What an interesting picture on so many levels, not least the narrative.
