Just a few of the 284 columns in Bernini's magnificent colonnades, with which Gian Lorenzo Bernini intended to enclose visitors to the piazza in "the maternal arms of Mother Church", when he redesigned the vast space for Pope Alexander VII between 1656 and 1667.
